Slovenian trip: day 2
Wednesday, 13th
- At 11:10 the students from the Reading Club presented Trbovlje and Slovenia. They were very excited to share with us all the hard work they have been doing for two weeks. One of the students from the group is very gifted in drawing and one his photos was even chosen by the Townhall to be published:
The guide has been exceptional, completely recommendable. The wall fresco behind us is a copy of the real one (including the colours) that used to be in the washing room and was the last thing the miners saw before going down. It represents the importance of collaboration among miners. They had to go always in groups of three so that if something happened to one of them ,,one could go up asking for help and the other could stay.
Finding new ideas for improvement
Thursday, 14th
1 PRESENTATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARY
ACTIVITIES
The National agency of Slovenia provides the 1st and the 7th graders with a book. In the 7th
grade the problem is that the motivation is going down. This iniative encourages them to know
the local library and the possibilities that reading offers.
In other libraries you have to pay if you don’t return a book on time, but here they dont work
with money, they work with candies. On Fridays is the day of the candy. Every child that comes
recieves one.
READING BADGE (national)
- They read five books and talk with the teacher about the topic of the book: character,
what would you change in the book, etc.
- Ceremony of the best readers: if you talk for all the books in the year you get this badge.
2 OBSERVING READING LITERACY
9th grade.
Group work:
Set the corners. Students have to work on different tasks:
- Tenses. The group gets a sentence. They have two dices: one has got question,
affirmative or negative and the other one has activities drawn. They throw the dice and
have to write down a sentence in the tense they have.
- Reading a text and aswer the questions. Read the text and answer the questions
or write a question for an answer.
- Definitions and words.
- Present perfect game. Have you ever….?
- Find Slovenian words hidden in class as detectives and translate them.
3 OBSERVING READING LITERACY AT
ENGLISH LESSONS (7th grade)
- “Then and now” photo presentation.
Kitchen photo: Did they have a computer?Did they have a dishwasher, did they
have an electric cooker?
Which year is the photo dated? Students forecast it.
- Imagine it is 1940s. What are the things they had at home? In the Student’s Book
there is a list of items. They have to separate them in two columms : they items they had
in the 1940s and the ones they hadn’t.
Lias workshop: games to work on the group feeling.
At the end of the workshop they have created a circle and have spoken about the aim of
the games which is:
-To feel each oter
-To trust each other
-Not to exclude anybody
– The importance of feeling when you are in a group together.
After finishing the activities, students have been asked about their feelings while doing it
and they all have answered that they have felt like belonging to the group and happy.
Lia has said that she likes the energy of the group.
We have noticed that some students had different socks and they have explained us that’s
an event for the week to symbolize the tolerance.
They are celebrating the international tolerance week:
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for Tolerance is annually observed on
November 16 to educate people about the need for tolerance in society and to help
them understand the negative effects of intolerance.
The shape of the image is the T of TOLERANCE.
4 PARTICIPATING AT READING CLUB
ACTIVITIES
Students form different grades mixed together. Three students from the Reading
Club and a student from the project Building Bridges.
-Read together.
DISCUSSION:
-What have you learnt?
-What were they talking about?
-Themes: do they speak about….?
5 FAMILY LITERACY WORKSHOP
Ursa told us that she was the first eTwinning ambassador in Solvenia.
The first project she did was with Poland : Working for tolerance.
She got the National Quality Project Certificate and after that they named her
ambassador. She has also a digital book of all the eTwinning projects she has enrolled in.
She is the leader of the family literacy workshop we have been invited to.
One family member has to come with a student. Most of them were mothers, although
there also was a grandmother and a father.
She has shown the way of searching a book in their library via internet.
Suprise bag:( vrecka presenecenja)
- They had to take out an animal out of the bag and then choose a book related
to the animal.
- With that book they had to feel in a sheet with the information required and
draw the animal.
- Afterwards they had to do the presentation in front of the audience.
- They meet once a month.
- They have to locate each animal in its natural environment in a map.
After that all, of them have to explain the information with all the group and to finish she gave a sweet to each one and a DIY kit for crafting their own bookmark. On December she will read for them: storytelling and they have already arranged the date. Ursa told us that after this activity she will organise surprising activities.
After such an interesting day of activities and innovative ideas for our classes we have gone to have dinner to our favourite restaurant here the “K5”.
And because of the Diabetes international day the school and lots of buildings in Trbovlje have dressed today in blue. Here the photo of the school:
Tomorrow we have another amazing day waiting for us. We are going to interview one of the students of the Debate Club and we are also visiting Ljubljana. We are looking forward to it!!!
Best readers competition
Today it has been an exhausting but exciting day , full of emotions, as we are leaving tomorrow.
First hour in the morning we have interviewed a student about the Reading and Debate Club and afterwards about his skills to draw.
Here you can see the interviews and his drawings.
OUR LAST DAY
Saturday, 16 November
Finally the day arrived and we have to leave Trbovlje. At 8 o’clock we have gone to have breakfast and everything was ready for us (even at the hostel have taken care of us).
At quarter past eight our driver Katarina has arrived (Go Optic company) and what a wonderful chat from the Hostel to the airport! What an incredible chat we have had with her! We have philosofised about evrything under the sun: politics, nature, economics, music…What a girl! She could run her own business, but she loves her job and being in contact with people.
